Our Vision

RAPID is an interdisciplinary group of students and researchers from multiple engineering disciplines within the Cockrell School of Engineering. It is our objective to deliver automation solutions for any and every aspect of well construction. Our goal is to reduce drilling/completion time/cost by more than 50 percent and the number of individuals at the rig site by more than 50 percent.

Drilling Education

Our goal: develop future researchers and engineers (at the undergraduate, masters, and PhD levels) to bring advanced automation technologies to the oil and gas industry. To do this, our program includes four key elements: a customizable interdisciplinary curricula, engineering-based research projects, continual collaboration, and proactively recruiting for diversity.

Drilling Research

Our research focus and areas of expertise are:

  • Automated drilling control
  • Intelligent mechanization and automation
  • Modeling, simulation, and empirical validation of downhole environments.
  • Monitoring, data analytics and “Big Data”

More detail is on the research page and in the RAPID Flyer (.pdf).
